Strong communities

Building connections, bridging cultures

At The MaraWay, our Indigenous leadership is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that closing gaps in opportunity, access, and understanding happens when we embrace diversity and inclusivity, bringing together people from all cultures and backgrounds.

Our programs are designed to connect communities, break down barriers, and empower individuals. By partnering with local organisations from a wide range of cultural and social backgrounds, we create spaces where people can come together to solve challenges collaboratively and support one another in meaningful ways.

Participants in MaraWay programs come from many parts of the world, including Congolese, Thai, Filipino, Nepalese, and other migrant and refugee communities. Through our programs, they have the privilege of learning about Australian Indigenous culture, and experience firsthand the supportive, empowering environment that Indigenous leadership can provide.

This connection not only provides practical skills and personal growth, but also builds bridges across cultures, helping all participants feel included, respected, and valued.

Seriana, a proud Torres Strait Islander and mother of three, has a lifelong passion for education. After years working in retail, media, administration, and as a Teacher Aide, she enrolled in the Skill-Up Program to focus on early childhood education.

“Being able to do what you love, to turn your passion into a profession, is extremely important for your wellbeing… I see myself working with younger children until I slow down into retirement. It’s more than a job – it’s a calling.”

Seriana completed her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care provided in cooperation with MiHaven Training, and has accepted a position at a local childcare centre in Cairns. She is committed to being a role model and sharing her culture, values, and knowledge with her community.
